For the sixty-fourth major content addition since its launch, the multiplayer Fallout experience is preparing to launch its most substantial addition yet this December. Titled Burning Springs, this massive update will introduce additional firepower, additional quests, and transport players to the freshly added area of the Ohio wasteland.

An Impressive Evolution

There once was, the notion of this online Fallout experience obtaining such a substantial update multiple years after launch would have appeared unimaginable. At the time the online experience originally released in 2018, it was met with skepticism from reviewers and gamers who deemed the release version unpolished and conceptually incomplete. Some thought it would suffer the same fate as other live-service attempts of that time.

We've just consistently trusted in this project, explained the development lead. The debut was comparable to the first chapter of our narrative. People come out and they don't see much content, and they learn about their world. Our approach was just staying focused and continuing to produce the content that we know our community will enjoy, and that we personally enjoy.

Exploring New Territory

Burning Springs represents the biggest ever update to date. The key element is the territory addition, allowing players to travel beyond into the Ohio region and discover what events have occurred there. Spoiler alert: Nothing good!

According to the creators that entering a fresh territory after so many years in West Virginia presented an perfect chance to experiment with an new setting within the Fallout lore.

We hadn't thoroughly investigated Ohio in the game's history in depth, stated the creative director. From our current map, if you head eastward, you begin entering the Washington DC area. That region has been thoroughly developed. The Ohio territory was explored too much. Accordingly, this installment being taking place first in the chronology gives us multiple storytelling options. The team wanted to discover what's transpiring in this new region!

Finding Influence from Classic Titles

The most stands out about the game's interpretation of this new territory is that it's designed as a dry environment. This may look surprising given the real-world location of Ohio, but there's a strategic rationale for this design decision: The aesthetic was heavily inspired by Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Rather than exactly duplicating features from those games, the creators concentrated on capturing the fundamental tone of those experiences within this update.

It wasn't centered around studying those installments and stating we need specific elements, stated the creative director. What we sought to create was taking the characteristic feel of those previous titles and having that properly represented in the new content. What I told the team when we began working on the fresh territory was: It must include desert environments, iconic creatures, and numerous raiders. To me, that embodies what the third installment and New Vegas characterize. Those are the fundamental aspects that define the distinct tone of those games, and so I aimed to have that recreated here.

Amazon Show Connection

The popularity of the Amazon streaming show produced a substantial rise in user engagement for Fallout 76, with accounts indicating a multiple times engagement boost. The studio understood they needed to utilize this circumstance, but didn't have the sufficient timeline to implement a comprehensive connection immediately.

The method came through natural progression when the creators found the natural intersection with The Ghoul, who functions as a mission providing vendor within the fresh content.

We were establishing what this new region would contain, what the overall tone would be, and then what the hallmark aspect of the new region would evolve into, that's bounty hunting, explained the creative director. What person ideal for presenting such activities than this character? Since he is a enthusiastic player of the franchise too, he was extremely enthusiastic to collaborate with us and complete this project. Therefore it wasn't planned initially, but it developed through organic development of the content.

Coming Updates

This expansion doesn't represent the last expansion for the online game. The development team is actively creating on the first substantial next year's content and organizing more expansions continuing as far as the seventy-second addition.

There was a moment where we couldn't imagine there would ever be an update 76, remarked the production director. Currently we are at a stage where things are so great, for both the television series and the online experience.
